Reviews (selection)

[But the crown of laurels goes to the breathtaking or rather the supreme among all: the spectacular Pole Adam Kaldunski, eternally engraved in memory by his interpretation of a Study no. 3 in B minor by the Quebec composer
and pianist Marc-André Hamelin.]
– about performance in the first stage of the Concours Musical International de Montréal – Eric Sabourin

[Adam Kałduński touched the hearts of the audience with the most emotional interpretation of Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 7. His performance captivated the listeners and gave this piece a special intensity.]
– about performance in the semifinals of the International Telekom Beethoven Competition Bonn – David

“Mr. Adam Kałduński’s program included three Paderewski, the Menuet and Nocturne were elegant and well-paced. (…) in the Nocturne, harmonic colours were beautifully executed. But nuance and lyricism were not
everything: the virtuoso passages of Chopin’s Ballade Op. 38 had agitation and drama, with powerful execution. Kałduński has a wonderful range of colour and nuance in his conceptions of each work.” 2022-11-12
– about performance in the second stage of the International Paderewski Piano Competition in Bydgoszcz – Jarred Dunn, official reviewer of the 12th International Paderewski Piano Competition, host of the 12th Paderewski Competition studio,

emocji. Kałduński cały czas panował nad szlachetnością dźwięku i neoklasyczną dyscypliną czasu. W finale świetne natarczywe synkopy i narastanie napięcia. Dopracowany program i poruszająca prezentacja.” 2022-11-09
[The same instrument sounded completely different under the fingers of Adam Kałduński. Bach’s Prelude in B flat minor from WTC vol. I with every change of harmony consciously experienced and a melodious, very calm
concept of the fugue. Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 7 was interpreted very wisely and deeply, without shocking with excessively fast tempo or aggression of articulation. One could hear the awareness in creating all the motifs and
showing the wealth of emotions. Kałduński constantly controlled the nobility of sound and neoclassical discipline of time. In the finale, great insistent syncopes and a build-up of tension. A refined program and a moving
presentation.]
– about performance in the first stage of the International Paderewski Piano Competition in Bydgoszcz – Jarred Dunn, official reviewer of the 12th International Paderewski Piano Competition, host of the 12th Paderewski Competition studio,

[Adam Kałduński played with extraordinary self-assurance and flexibility. He suppressed the volume of the Etude in B minor, Op. 25 No. 10 for a long time, while relentlessly building up the tension. This made the forte of the
reprise positively ear-splitting. Nor did he try to squeeze too much out of the Ballade in F minor, Op. 52. He was unhurried and kept anear out for the lyrical passages, although he allowed himself some drama and amusement.]
– about performance in the first stage of the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw – Krzysztof Stefański, Chopin Courier (official magazine of the 18th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw),

Sonatę b-moll op. 35 Fryderyka Chopina, zaskakując słuchaczy lirycznym, a zarazem intelektualnym podejściem do materii
muzycznej.
[I first encountered Adam Kałduński’s playing in 2019 during the 74th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Festival in Duszniki-Zdrój. In his semi-recital, the artist revealed himself as an excellent interpreter of Ignacy Jan
Paderewski’s works. Listening to the Minuet in G major or the Nocturne in B flat major, I was astonished, and a few hours after the recital ended, it dawned on me that only the composer himself played these pieces in a more
perfect way. At this concert, Kałduński also presented, among others, Fryderyk Chopin’s Sonata in B flat minor, Op. 35, surprising the listeners with a lyrical and at the same time intellectual approach to musical matter. A few
months later, playing in the final of the National Chopin Competition, the artist created an equally lyrical, and most importantly – avoiding unnecessary virtuosity concept of the Concerto in E minor, Op. 11. A deliberate lack of
virtuosity also accompanied the Duszniki interpretation (2020 edition) of the complete Etudes Op. 25, which, considering the pianist’s young age, could have surprised many a listener. Without a doubt, the greatest advantages of
Adam Kałduński’s interpretation include the aforementioned intellectual, noble approach to the pieces performed, as well as the melodious sound of this young Polish musician. I secretly hope that in the 18th Chopin Competition
the artist will decide to publicly present the complete Etudes Op. 25, which he coped with so well in Duszniki.]
– Dariusz Marciniszyn, Beethoven Magazine no. 31

“Kałduński adopted a fine maestoso character at an excellently judged tempo with a lovely singing tone in the poetic phrases which indicated an instinctive understanding of many aspects of the composer. […] The pianist is
truly musical and breathes his phrases without rushing. The fiorituras of Chopin’s somewhat improvised style of writing in this movement were perfectly integrated into the melodic line. His tone and touch are graceful and
refined. […]” 2020/02/07

– about performance in the finals of the 50th National Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw – Michael Moran, Classical Music in Poland and the Europe of Chopin blog;

“Quite unexpectedly the Op.53 so-called ‘Heroic’ Polonaise was one of the best I have heard for a very long time – packed full of raw defiance, anger and brimming with that curious Polish emotion known as żal that occurs so
often in Chopin, in fact the composer seems almost addicted to it. Such an exciting performance, majestic and aristocratic with a type of direct volatility, slightly out of civilized control. Exactly as it should be… […]
The Mazurkas Op.33 were subtle and satisfying. The G sharp minor was gently introverted and introspective. The C major revealed a fine tone and sensitive touch at the instrument to call up the elegiac mood. The D major was
nicely energetic with ‘bounce’ and infectious rhythm. He seemed to imagine the dance in his own body. The B minor, the ‘tragic’ key, was expressively regretful rather like the sun coming from behind rapidly scudding clouds.
This performance was most moving on occasion.
The Ballade in F minor Op.52 was possessed of a good sense of musical narrative and full of emotion. There was poetry aplenty here but also regret, anger and resignation. Passionate outbursts followed by almost immediate
regret at losing control but then the agitated mood inevitably returns as in life. […]
Excellent recital that should put him in the final.” 2020/02/04
– about performance in the second stage of the 50th National Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw – Michael Moran, Classical Music in Poland and the Europe of Chopin blog;

“Adam Kałduński to pianista wyraźnie liryczny i analityczny.
nutami. Wczoraj ujął nas przede wszystkim eleganckim Paderewskim (w Nokturnie B-dur i Sarabandzie h-moll czarował kapryśną, ale zawoalowaną linią melodyczną i ciepłymi harmoniami), potem nostalgicznym Nokturnem
H-dur op. 62 i Sonatą b-moll Chopina, kiedy to w I części kapitalnie przejaśnił dramat mocnymi cezurami i lirycznym ładunkiem.” 2019-08-07
[Adam Kałduński is a clearly lyrical and analytical pianist. He delicately sips the time of his playing, chooses the means rationally, takes care of the certainty of solutions, and is also a melancholic who often looks beyond the
notes. Yesterday he captivated us above all with elegant Paderewski (in the Nocturne in B flat major and Sarabande in B minor he charmed us with a capricious but veiled melodic line and warm harmonies), then with the
nostalgic Nocturne in B major op. 62 and Chopin’s Sonata in B flat minor, when in the first movement he brilliantly brightened the drama with strong caesuras and lyrical charge.]
